Welcome to the Mountain Biking Capital of the Midwest! Over 300 miles of mapped and marked trails greet the mountain bike enthusiast. Developed by CAMBA, the system is divided into six clusters, each with one or more trailheads. The system stretches from Hayward to Iron River, making the Cable area the hub of one of Wisconsin’s best mountain biking destinations. The terrain lends itself to riders of all abilities, from beginners to seasoned fat tire experts.

Elk Herd

A unique opportunity to see a 400-animal elk herd around Clam Lake, WI. This is the largest of the only two herds in Wisconsin. An interactive touchscreen kiosk with expansive information about the elk herd and their habitat is located at the junction of state highways 77 and GG in Clam Lake

Loon Watching and Listening

You may also enjoy sitting on our dock and watching the residential loons on Little Bass Lake. The common loons are famous for their eerie and beautiful calls. They have four different calls. Learn more about identifying the Loon calls.

Loon Tour on a pontoon boat

Learn amazing facts about these ancient birds and the beautiful lakes where they live while touring on a pontoon boat. A Museum naturalist will share stories about the facts and fantasies behind this Northwoods icon. Meet at the Museum at 9 a.m. and return by noon. Registration required. $38 member/$43 non-member.

CrossCountry Skiing

The Birkie Trail system

The Cable area was recently cited by CNN as one of the top 5 places to hit the horizontal slopes. This region is steeped in Nordic skiing history and home to one of the largest cross-country ski trail networks in the county, the American Birkebeiner Trail. With 150 kilometers of interconnected trails, you can ski for days. The woods take on a remarkable beauty in the winter, and there’s no better way to experience it than on cross-country skis. Many resorts throughout the area have groomed and maintained cross-country ski trails leaving right from their property.

Rock Lake Trailhead

The Rock Lake National Recreation Trail is a narrow, classic-only ski trail traversing rolling to hilly terrain. This trail is suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers. The downhills are long and twisting but have good run-outs. The two most extended loops pass several small scenic lakes. The trail is in a maple and oak forest with occasional stands of large white pine. Trail Length: 2 Km, 4 Km, 7.1 Km, 11.5 Km, 16 Km, and Rock Lake Loop, which adds 1.8 Km to the 11.5 and 16 Km trails.
